The increase in practice of mathematics in our day to day lives besides education would catalyze the economic growth of Bangladesh – such sentiments were echoed by speakers on Saturday morning at Academia, one of the leading English Medium Schools of Bangladesh, which hosted its 6th edition of the annual English Medium Maths Olympiad. The competition was held at Academia’s Lalmatia campus, where Mathematicians drew inspiration from how countries like South Korea reached the zenith of economic growth by increasing the application of mathematics in its everyday life. Hence mathematicians have called for the government to increase its budget for mathematical skill development and to encourage its application outside the classroom.
Prof. Sajeda Banu, President of the Mathematics committee of Bangladesh, graced the event as the Chief Guest. The special guests were Prof. Muhammad Kaykobad who is the Dean of the EEE department of BUET, United International Univesity’s (UIU) Pro V.C. Prof. Dr. Chowdhury Mofizur Rahman and Bangladesh Mathematics committee’s General Sectetary Prof. Shahidul Islam. The programme was presided over by Dr. M Mahbubul Huque, Principal of Academia. The 6th English Medium Mathematics Olympiad was organized by Mrs. Sarwat Zeb and Muhammad Kutub Uddin, Chairperson and Managing Director of Academia respectively.
About 1500 students from different English Medium schools across the country participated in the event. The written Olympiad was held in the morning and afterwards, the aspiring Mathematicians displayed the various projects related to mathematics that they had created. They were visited by guests who thoroughly enjoyed their work. At the end, prizes were distributed to the top 5 students of each category from class I to A’Levels by the esteemed Mathematicians.
